March 16, 2020
Dear AAPS Families,

As Superintendent Swift shared in her earlier message, we are experiencing an unprecedented time as we all navigate the challenges caused by the spread of COVID-19.  Through it all, we will work together to care for each other, our students, our neighbors, and our community. All of the most up to date AAPS COVID-19 information is posted at /.

Today, we are sharing the Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) Continuous Learning Plan for students during the school closure.  All resources related to the Continuous Learning Plan can be accessed at /continuouslearning.

Making the shift to digital instruction will take time. Our hard working teachers are busy planning for instruction and receiving professional development this week. In order to provide students with continuous learning the week of March 16, students and families can access grade level and content related enrichment activities by clicking here.

Beginning March 23rd, each teacher will begin messaging students with a daily learning opportunity.  The table below provides you with additional information to ensure students are able to be successful during the school closure.  You will find links to learning opportunities and ways to receive support with devices, and Internet access. We understand that messages are coming to you quickly and often.  To make access easier, click the live links in the table below to access lessons and message teachers.

For the week of March 23rd, your student’s teacher will be messaging your student directly with links and instructions.  For ease of parent and student access, click here to access your student’s school and teacher’s classroom platform and email. coming soon!

A2Virtual classes will continue as normal. No changes to instruction will occur.
Students will need access to a device (computer, tablet, smartphone) to complete learning experiences.

Students were surveyed about technology needs on Friday.  If your student was not in school on Friday, look for a survey emailed directly to you today.

If your device needs change over time, please use this link to request tech needs for your child.

All AAPS school buidlings will continue to provide wireless access in the vicinity of the schools. AAPS is working in partnership with local Internet service providers to provide filtered hot spots throughout the community during the school closure.

The district plans to issue hot spot devices as well.  Those plans are in process. We will share updates as soon as possible.

Look for more information on this page after Thursday, March 19th for locations and how to access devices.

Communication

During the school closure, students and families can expect the following communication to be in place:

    • Teacher ↔ Student
      • No later than March 23, students will receive a message about Daily Learning Opportunities from their teacher via email and/or the classroom learning platform (Google Classroom, Moodle, classroom website, SeeSaw, etc).
      • Students can ask questions and seek feedback from the teacher via email and/or the classroom learning platform (Google Classroom, Moodle, classroom website, SeeSaw, etc).
      • A listing of teachers by school with email addresses and additional information related to continuous learning in their classroom will be available soon at /continuouslearning.
  • AAPS District Updates → Parents/Guardians
    • Website:  All information related to the AAPS Covid-19 response - including the Continuous Learning Plan - is posted on the AAPS website.
    • Email:  Parents/Guardians can expect an email directly from AAPS. The information from these emails will also be available on the AAPS website.

If you are not receiving communications, parents should email or call your school office directly.  While buildings may be closed, our hard working teams are available to serve you.

Student Expectations

During the school closure, students should:

  1. Check their AAPS email at least once daily to receive messages and learning experiences from their teacher(s).  For younger students, we expect these messages will come from the teacher and go to parents in most cases.
  2. Complete the assigned learning experiences to the best of their abilities.
  3. Ask questions to their teacher if needed. This is an important step if the student is not understanding the assigned learning experience.
  4. Turn in the assignment to their teacher (if required) via email or in the way the teacher indicated.

Because the response to Covid-19 is evolving, these are the expectations from now until spring break (March 27).  If needed, the expectations will be updated following spring break (beginning April 6).

Support for Students and Families

Special Education Services - For students receiving special education services, there may be some services where provision in an online setting is effective and others that are not conducive to delivery in this manner. We will do all in our control to ensure that our students are supported and will follow the guidance of the Michigan Department of Education regarding service provision.  If you have questions during this school closure, please contact your child’s IEP case coordinator.
